Augustus Fitzroy 1716-1741
Lord Augustus FITZROY 1716-1741
Younger son of Charles Fitzroy, 2nd Duke of Grafton, and a great-grandson of Charles II; after education at Eton College he was set up for a naval career and was a lieutenant by 1734, and a captain in 1736. He commanded the HMS Eltham 1736-39, then HMS Orford, and was involved in various military naval activity in and around the Mediterranean. In 1734 he married Elizabeth, daughter of William Cosby, Governor of New York, but was soon thereafter in trouble for unfaithfulness. He was made MP for Thetford 1739 and died in Jamaica two years later.
Fitzroy used an engraved armorial bookplate, made sometime after his marriage; the extent and disposition of his library is not known.
