Biographical Note

Native of Kirkcudbright, he was the son of Jean Brown. He received his M.A from the university of Edinburgh (July 1630). Minister of [[location::Wamphray] in Dumfriesshire from around 1655 until 1662. Brown was a covenanter, and was deprived of his post by an Act of parliament on 11th June 1662, and imprisoned in Edinburgh tollbooth for 5 weeks. He was released due to ill health, and afterwards went to Rotterdam to minister for a Scots congregation from March 1663. He retired to Utrecht but returned to Rotterdam in 1678 where he remained until his death.

Brown was a prolific author, whose theological works drew the esteem of Samuel Rutherford.

Books

The full extent and disposition of his library is unknown. His Fasti entry states that he bequeathed by his will, dated 2nd April 1676, "one hundred guineas to the poor of the Scottish congregation, Rotterdam, after the selling of his books…specially excepting the Complutensian Bible in six volumes, which he gave to his endeared friend and brother, Robert M'Ward." (Fasti, Vol.2, p.224)
