Sir Thomas STRADLING, 6th bart 1710-1738

Biographical Note

Younger son of Sir Edward Stradling, 5th bart, of St Donat's Castle, Glamorganshire, MP, from whom he inherited the title and family estates in 1735 (his elder brother Edward having died in 1726). He was killed in a duel in Montpellier in 1738, when the baronetcy became extinct.

Books

Stradling used an engraved armorial bookplate (Franks 28327); the extent of his library is not known. Given that he died so young, it seems unlikely that he would have assembled much of a library, but the Dictionary of Welsh Biography notes that "towards the end of the 18th century the fine library at St Donat's was sold", suggesting that there was a multi-generational family library there. His will has no mention of books; it was the subject of litigation after his death, and the estates were divided into three.
