Although the reading and owning of books by women, as well as men, was hugely common in the 17th century, the nature of the historical record means that we have many fewer documented libraries owned in their name. It has therefore been thought useful to create a category for those instances where we know, from lists, bookplates or surviving books, that a library owner was a woman.
