Businessmen

This category comprises a range of people whose activities seem best described under this heading, or are likely to have been. It includes rich people, who made their fortune primarily through trade or merchant activity (rather than inheritance), and those much more of the middling sort, from around the country. There are numerous book sales recorded from the late 17th and early 18th centuries (often with no surviving catalogue) where all we have is a name, not readily identifiable from standard sources, which have generally been classified here by default.
